School bus drivers strike for unpaid wages

A

round 100 school bus drivers went on strike in Ciracas, East Jakarta, on Tuesday and demanded the Transportation Ministry pay them in full.

A protester identified as JS said the technical management unit (UPT) handling the free school buses had paid the drivers only part of their monthly salaries in April and not at all in May.

He said the UPT had promised to pay their May wages on Monday but the promise had not been fulfilled.

However, he admitted that the drivers had received Rp 180,000 (US$15.50) per day but they were not registered with any medical insurance plan and did not receive any holiday allowance.

'€œOur status is also unclear. We are all hired for a three-month contract and no further talks have been held,'€ he explained as quoted by kompas.com.

Meanwhile, the head of the school buses'€™ UPT, Nurhayati Sinaga, declined to comment on the protesters'€™ demands, only saying the dispute had already been settled.
